Since the actual bug seems clear now: unless there are compelling
reasons your test example may uncover other latent bugs, it should be
possible to make it much, much shorter in order to expose this one.
Like, about 10 lines, and without any use of Autoconf or Automake.
Just FYI, so you don't waste lots of work.
