Or maybe it has no connection at all with what I described.  I did not  
run from a fresh build tree after having migrated to libtool 2.2  
(well, I'm not sure).  So maybe the stale state came from my  
config.cache.  But when I tried after having changed aclocal.m4, I did  
make a fresh build tree.  I'm confused now.

I do still have the problem of mkdir .deps/libltdl though.
