For the record, I know I did try to bootstrap my br0ken checkout with autoconf 2.61 (and possibly I even tried make before noticing the mistake) before upgrading to 2.64 (I upgraded from debian lenny to debian squeeze), but I'm fairly certain that I did bootstrap again with 2.64 after upgrading. I don't know if bootstrapping should get me out of the mess that appears to have been the result of the prior actions...
