I wonder if this might actually be a compiler bug. One really shouldn't
segfault inside the exception-handling stuff deep in the innards of the
C++ runtime, should one?

I see similar problems under Solaris 10 with GCC and a 64-bit AMD64 build (but Sun compiler works). Also similar failures with LLVM under FreeBSD. In times past (couple of years ago), I have received reports of GCC AMD64 exception failures under FreeBSD (identical to Solaris) but problems are somehow gone now. This is based on an exception throwing sanity check in the GraphicsMagick test suite.

It would be wrong to assume that issues are limited to Cygwin.

Up to now, I have totally failed to debug the issue. GDB itself cores, or provides no useful info. Divide and conquer has not worked either.
