a different approach is to configure every version into its own
subdirectory:


        configure --prefix=$HOME/usr/package/lilypond-x.y.z/

then you can decide which version to run by setting the appropriate
environment variables. Removing the package is done by

            rm -rf $HOME/usr/package/lilypond-x.y.z
