Why would this work?  You're removing MFINPUTS, and mf won't find the
mf sources from TEXMF=$(topdir):

    
    $ unset MFINPUTS
    $ export TEXMF={$HOME/usr/lilypond,$(kpsexpand \$TEXMF)}
    $ echo $TEXMF
    {/home/fred/texmf,!!/usr/local/lib/texmf,!!/usr/share/texmf}
    $ mf feta20
    This is METAFONT, Version 2.7182 (Web2C 7.3.7)
    kpathsea: Running mktexmf  feta20
    ! I can't find file `feta20'.
    <*> feta20

    Please type another input file name:
