Hmmh, after looking at this once again, I guess something with my
teTeX distribution at home (SuSE 7.0) may be weird.  After a fresh reboot,
problem #2 disappeared.  Problem #1 still exists (but it's easy to work
around it by tweaking the directory structure in the installation
directory according to where the load path expects all things).

lilypond-profile seems to work correctly; in particular, datadir is
correct.  datadir is also correctly prepended to TEXMF (btw., what is the
meaning of the exclamation marks that are put before some of the paths?).

I just compiled 1.5.59 at work (SuSE 7.3); here it works.  Strange.
I will have another look into it.
