This bug has been fixed recently but the fix hasn't been released
in any 1.4.x version yet. You can get the corrected version of
lilypond-book from the CVS archive using the following series of
commmands:

>> cvs -d :pserver:address@hidden:/home/lilypond login
(just press enter when you get a query for password
>> cvs -d :pserver:address@hidden:/home/lilypond co -P \
  -rlilypond_1_4 -d lilypond-1.4 lilypond/scripts/lilypond-book.py

To install the file, copy the first line of your current
lilypond-book file (run 'which lilypond-book' to find
where it is installed) to lilypond-book.py, rename the
resulting file to lilypond-book, copy the file to the
location of the old lilypond-book script and run
'chmod a+x /the/path/to/the/bin/directory/lilypond-book'.
