AFM font handling corrected?

For different reasons, I have not been able to contribute
much to the finalization of 1.8, so maybe this has already
been solved.

I just want to make sure if someone has looked at the handling
of AFM font metrics files. We used to have a bug such that the
scaling is completely wrong. Since the bug is consequent within
Lilypond, it works for the feta fonts, but unfortunately the
calculation of lyrics extents breaks completely on systems that
have preinstalled .afm files for the Computer Modern fonts
(standard teTeX installations don't suffer from this "problem"
but we have had bug reports from TeXLive and MacOS X users).
