Known issue. This was discussed recently on the lilypond-user list; there's a 
workaround there. I think also that the feature is open for sponsoring, see 
http://lilypond-design.com/sponsor/index.html.

Known bug, volta-bracket-align.ly in the bug database.

You can experiment with this workaround:
\override Staff.VoltaBracket #'minimum-space = #7

Did you try to print out the score on paper? PDF/PS viewers often make 
rounding errors that make scores look bad on a computer screen.
