I've now looked into a very tightly typesetted piano score (attached; a snippet from a Beethoven piano sonata published by UE about 80 years ago which shows both wide and tight engraving); my conclusion is that length of a beamlet always varies because it is always engraved manually. In general, its approximative length varies between 3/4
and a whole note head width; your examples show about the same length.

In other words, it's not dependent on the distance to the next object but rather fixed.
