These are not inconsistent.  Remember we are moving an extended
object with respect to a fixed point.  So "left-aligned" means the 
object's left edge is aligned to the reference point, i.e. it is moved to
the right of the reference.

No, the whole paragraph looks correct to me, but I remember agonising
over it when I wrote it.  It's easier to understand when you put the
emphasis on "self", so the alignments refer to the left and right ends of
the _object_, not the field it's moving in.

If it helps have a look at the slightly different wording in the Notation
Reference, where there is an example:

So not a bug.
