The former.

set LILYPOND_GC_YIELD=45

I'm in the process of trying this.  It does limit the working-set, with a value 
of 45
to around 1GB, at the expense of greatly increasing the paging load, but it did 
not stop 2.13.14 from crashing in the same way.  I'm just about to try it with
the latest released binary before I report.
