Re: SmallCaps Gap

Hi,

It's a pitiable fact that these so-called "SmallCaps" are no real SmallCaps
but just faked by using scaled-down capital letters as a replacement.
This has two major drawbacks:
(1) the line thicknesses are not balanced and the "small caps" look to thin
(2) there is no kerning.

The missing kerning is the reason why the spacing between VA, WA, AV, etc.
does not look good.

Conclusion: If you want to use SmallCaps, you should use a true SmallCaps
font.
All the fake replacement attempts will never be usable in a professional
way.

Meanwhile, it's possible to use OTF font features.

\override #'(font-features . ("smcp"))

instead of the fake \smallCaps command will invoke "real" small caps.

Unfortunately, the kerning of Century Schoolbook L resp. TeXGyre... isn't
too good, either, but that's the price you pay for using non-professional
(and free-of-charge) fonts, I'm afraid.
There's an improvement in Av/Aw, though.

All the best,
Torsten
