Hm.  To the best of my recollection it wasn't supported on any system I
had access to (including SunOS or Solaris).  It seems unlikely that
there were features in the NFS standard that weren't supported on Sun
systems though.  Maybe it was the NFS servers we used.

But, I guess I'll just shut up now and just say, hopefully the features
of GNU make are sufficient to let you work with these systems, whatever
they support.
