Details:

If one wants to simulate ?= for singly expanded variables, one has to write 

     ifeq ($(origin FOO), undefined)
       FOO := bar
     endif

and doing that repeatedly is abit of a pain...

I'm using 3.80, but reading the NEWS for 3.81 shows that this is not there
either.
