Yes, they did; I'm closing this as a duplicate of bug #10593
There is info there about why it works the way it does, and in fact in the
regression test suite there is a test (commented out) that shows that the
simple implementation of this feature (also commented out, as the above bug
shows) leads to an infinite recursion.
That's not to say that a more complicated implementation couldn't resolve
this problem, which is why the original bug is still open.
