I can confirm that removing whitespace works w/ gmake 3.81, 3.82 and BSD make.

Ideally, the proposed patch will be incorporated and BSD != lines will be
parsed in a compatible manner, eliminating the need for multiple lines for BSD
make/gmake compatible makefiles.
