...and Reni Urban has nothing to do with Cygwin's make package.

For more 2c from a Cygwin maintainer.  Cygwin's spawn implementation is
rarely-used and never tested.  I would not be surprised to see bugs in
the code around the issues of, e.g., fd handling.

I might feel more comfortable with this if it was, as Eli suggested, a
command-line option.
