My understanding of the issue is that there's a compatibility problem
with the newly-released version of glibc.  If you're seeing this issue
with an older version of glibc, then maybe it's something different.

Regarding the kernel: the kernel has pretty much nothing that it
depends on, other than hardware and the compiler: obviously they have
very few library and tool interaction issues.  From an environment
portability standpoint, the kernel is one of the simplest packages
there is.
