There's another possibility, but I'm not proud of it.

It is legal in *roff to use an ASCII DEL as the escape character.

I tested this and it works.  Where your input failed before, it succeeds
now.

Strictly, it doesn't solve the problem because DEL is legal in a macro
argument and in the text of a man(7) page header or footer, too.

But it's pretty darned unlikely to be used.

So I _could_ kick this problem into a corner where few will likely trip
over it, until I have my beloved string iteration request.

But I don't know whether to be proud of or nauseated by my cleverness.

Opinion?
