I'd very much like to see @math extended to be more suitable for
documents which include formulae etc. Unfortunately, I don't know
enough TeX to do it myself.

Does the above limitation hold if you expand macros with "makeinfo -E",
and only submit to TeX the results of that? If the problem persists
with "makeinfo -E" as well, please post a real-life example. I'm
guessing that some work-around can be found.
