    If the bookmark text contains certain "active" characters, you get
    funny TeX macros in the bookmark.

I changed \pdfmakeoutlines in texinfo.tex to call \turnoffactive. This
makes the right text appear in the bookmark for all the special
characters except \{}.  Fixing those is much harder -- the way the .toc
file gets written would have to change.  So that's not going to happen
any time soon.  Sorry.

The new version of texinfo.tex is on ftp.gnu.org (etc.).

Thanks for the report and initial workaround ...
