I don't understand.  Wouldn't you have to switch at each @appendix or
whatever?  Or conversely back to $LANG at each error message (maybe that
would be better)?

    Actually, maybe a part of the txi-??.tex files should be generated
    from the regular .po files.

Yes, that has been suggested before.  It wouldn't be too hard, I think.
I've added it to TODO.
