Right, that is the real problem.
Word hyphenation wouldn't work
I was thinking that @'e would be able to produce a true accented e
letter, as opposed to a \accent.
Accented characters created from CM fonts are not at book quality.
I'm surprised to hear you say that. An awful lot of books have been
printed using them.
