I'm not sure about the "Yes".  I don't know of a "pdftype" program.  If
you don't know of one either, forget pdf for now.  

    What do you mean exactly with dvi and/or pdf checking ? Do you mean
    running dvitype and removing stamps or also diffing and removing
    files when results are right, generating ok files and so on ?

Running dvitype, removing timestamps, running diff, exit 0 or 1, that's
all.  Not removing files or worrying about whether the master files come
from.

dvicheck TESTFILE OKFILE
-> 0 if the "same", 1 if not, plus diff output to stdout.
Or something like that.
