It's just my personal opinion, but I think a comma would disrupt reading
even more than a period.  It's easier for me to read "*Note Blah::." as
one chunk than "*Note Blah::,".

I don't know about tab, but spc would be good.  However, I had the
impression that there has to be a period or a comma terminating the
xref.  However, however, I just tried it with whitespace following, and
it worked.  Wowie zowie. I'll try some more experiments to see if a
space will really fly.
