Here my thoughts on Akim's patch:

- It is a good thing.

- Stepan's bringing up distcheck failures makes me swing back to
believing it should not be the default after all, and therefore we
have to have the dual/complex implementation. Sorry Akim.

- Therefore we need an option to get the new behavior. I don't like
--build, that option already means something completely different in
configure. How about --separate-dirs (a la du :)?

- We should also implement some option to do the rm's for Automake, as
Alexandre suggested, so the next version of Automake can use it, and
then we can make the new behavior the default. I don't like
--mostlyclean for the name of this option, because the coding
standards explicitly say (non-distributed) DVI files should be removed
at `clean', not `mostlyclean'. (Not that I especially agree with
this, but it's not worth time debating.) How about --removefiles?

- I think a short README inside the *.t2d directory is a good idea (just
saying "created by texi2dvi, see source for info" or some such, maybe).

Alexandre/Akim, does it sound ok? Are you willing?

Thanks,
k
