Well, looking at them with a PDF viewer, they look really bad IMHO.
Italic periods probably worked best for a certain printer which RMS
used 13 years ago. Today, with less and less people going to print
the manuals but viewing them online, I see really no reason to use
them.
Perhaps it is possible to change them to roman, providing an
@italicleaders command for backwards compatibility...
