pdfeTeX error when compiling lilypond.texi with accents in node names

Hello,

I'm trying to compile LilyPond user manual in PDF in languages other
than English (French, Spanish and German).  The Texinfo source is in
UTF-8, many node names and section titles contain accented characters.

I'm running an i686 with Fedora 7, TeXlive 2007 (teTeX is not installed
at all) and Texinfo from CVS.

texi2pdf is called from within makefiles; on my computer, the command
line is

texi2pdf -I /home/lilycvs/git/lily/m-trans/Documentation/user/./out-www --batch 
 lilypond.texi

The first pdfetex pass is OK, except some undefined cross-references
caused by non-perfect text substitution of references and node names.
On the second pass, pdfetex finds an error at the right beginning of
lilypond.aux; it seems that it's caused by an acent @' in first xfdef
argument.  That is strange, as the attached sample.texi contains node
names and section titles with accents, and yet texi2pdf compiles it with
with no error or warning.

I'm not sure how to solve this.  If first argument of @xrdef is only
used internally, is it possible to add a routine which strips accents
@-commands in it to avoid the error?

Besides this, accents disappear in PDF index side pane; is it possible
to keep them?

which I'm going to interpret as `\def\a{}'.

If you say, e.g., `\def\a1{...}', then you must always
put `1' after `\a', since control sequence names are
made up of letters only. The macro here has not been
followed by the required stuff, so I'm ignoring it.

I've run across a `}' that doesn't seem to match anything.
For example, `\def\a#1{...}' and `\a}' would produce
this error. If you simply proceed now, the `\par' that
I've just inserted will cause me to report a runaway
argument that might be the root of the problem. But if
your `}' was spurious, just type `2' and it will go away.

I suspect you've forgotten a `}', causing me to apply this
control sequence to too much text. How can we recover?
My plan is to forget the whole thing and hope for the best.
