Thanks for the report. This is currently a misfeature of texinfo.tex.
To do it right we must use marks to define chapter names/numbers for
the purposes of headlines/footlines. I can easily add support for
chapter names/numbers, but I see that texinfo.tex also defines section
name (@thissection). So, I'm not sure whether I should also define
@thissection through marks, given the fact that it's not even
documented. (Besides, I suspect other macros (\setref?) rely on it
being defined the way it is defined now.) Karl, wdyt?
Also, regarding macro names. Since @thischapter and friends would
change the timing of their definition, I wonder if we should add new
commands instead, maybe @pagechapter, etc.? That is, @thischapter
would be used in text (page body), and @pagechapter would be used in
headlines (during output routine). Karl, do you think anybody ever
uses the @thischapter macros in body text?
