Thanks.  Bruno just coincidentally (?) submitted the same patch.

After looking at it, it seems to me it would be better for defs[.in] to
change the PATH to put $srcdir/util first.  Otherwise, texi2dvi wouldn't
necessarily be invoking the newly built versions of makeinfo and
texindex ...

Those troublesome tests have garned far more reports than everything
else put together.  Oh well.
