<shock>.  Is this wise?  The speed of makeinfo is important - it takes me
2.5 seconds to make the Elisp manual (1.2 GHz Athlon), which is near
enough instantaneous as not to matter.

texi2html is written in perl, isn't it?  How does texi2html (generating
Info) stack up against makeinfo?  If it were a factor 10 slower, taking
half a minute to generate Elisp, that would set me (and others?) back to
a "batch mode" development process.
