    I'm using texinfo version 4.7 on a Linux system. 

4.7 is quite old.  For starters, I suggest getting the current
texinfo.tex from http://ftpmirror.gnu.org/texinfo/texinfo.tex (or
http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/texinfo/texinfo.tex) and just putting it in the
document directory.  It shouldn't be necessary to update any other
files.
