Such long titles seem pretty suboptimal to me in general, although I
admit I can't think of any way to rewrite this one.

Anyway, I can eventually make @* work, so you would write:
@title AWK As A Major Systems Programming @* Language---Revisited

That was always the intent.  It even made its way into the manual.
(As did the @titlefont and @title example from Eli, I see.)
