It is possible to make the patch behave this way, just by replacing line
1551 from :

      test -n "$TEXI2DVI_USE_RECORDER" || TEXI2DVI_USE_RECORDER=nomaybe

to

      test -n "$TEXI2DVI_USE_RECORDER" || TEXI2DVI_USE_RECORDER=yesmaybe

usage also would need update accordingly.

I had kept the use of \openout trace when available by default in
respect of your "we shouldn't break the world" statement in the luatex
bug report http://tracker.luatex.org/view.php?id=909.
