Thanks a lot Gavin! That helped me find the problem.I have my own TeX Live installation, built directly from the `install-tl' script on TeX Live's webpage. It is independent of the operating system's package manager (and managed by `tlmgr').
A recent package I installed from my operating system's package manager needed TeX Live as a dependency, so the package manager started downloading and installing its own version of TeX Live. I only noticed in the middle and immediately stopped the download/build.
However, the OS's partially downloaded/installed TeX Live was apparently interfering with the other TeX Live. After I removed the operating system's copy, everything worked nicely again.
I was under the impression that my OS's package manager (`pacman') will only make changes once it is complete. So I thought nothing will happen if I interrupt/close it manually. But apparently I was wrong!
Any way, thanks a lot for the useful tip. It was very useful in tracking down the source of the problem.
Cheers, Mohammad
