I recommend that you build and install ddd-3.4.0, released in May, 2023.

Some distributions have the current DDD release in their repository.
Debian does not appear to be one of them.

How?  By editing the .ddd/init file?

Dear Michael.
After  building ddd-3,4 from source, the issue is not reproducible anymore.
