Hmm. I may have been running with an older DejaGnu.
Debian 3.0 calls its DejaGnu 1.4.2-1.1; runtest --version reports 1.4.2.x.
When using 1.4.3, my problem went away. Not sure I understand it,
but I'm grateful :-)
I have learned that, in a board definition file that uses ftp for file transfer,
you have to add the line
load_generic_config "unix";
otherwise ftp will leave the file without the executable bit, and
remote_load will fail. Loading "unix" may have other benefits, too;
I haven't checked.
I've also learned that DejaGnu before 1.4.3 ignores the statements
set_board_info hostname xxxx
set_board_info rsh_prog /usr/bin/ssh
set_board_info rcp_prog /usr/bin/scp
