Okay, a regression hunt of dejagnu master git revealed that this
regression is actually quite old and that the offending commit was...

This issue was latent in 1.5.1 because the 1.5 branch was reused for
developing 1.5.1 whereas 1.5.2 was created from master instead.
I can confirm that reverting this change in 1.5.2 eliminates the
problem and I get the expected...
