EDB is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL).
README excerpt:
This directory contains EDB, the Emacs Database.
EDB was written by Michael Ernst <address@hidden>,
and is being maintained by Thien-Thi Nguyen <address@hidden>.
NEWS excerpt:
- 1.22 | 2004-06-02
This is a cleanup release (perhaps one of several) following
maintainership transfer from Michael Ernst, the author of EDB,
to Thien-Thi Nguyen, the slowly-searching student of EDB (and
other works of codified thought).
Cleanup means adding "./configure && make && make install"
support (including commonly related things like "make dist",
NEWS file, etc); minor upgrading of the elisp dialect and
style; and bundling the examples. A request for outstanding
bugfixes posted to one of the newsgroups has gone unanswered
to date, so this release includes no bugfixes.
The programming interface has not changed. Those elements
mentioned in the info pages are guaranteed to NOT change for
all 1.x versions of EDB. If you have written an application
based on EDB that uses undocumented elements, you can either
contribute doc patches (which if accepted would result in
those elements being guaranteed to NOT change), or prepare
yourself for the necessity of rewriting that particular code
if/when the undocumented elements change.

a big thanks goes to Michael Ernst, first and foremost for writing EDB,
and second for passing on its maintenance so that it can be improved by
the free software community (at least, the part that uses Emacs :-).
EDB hackers should note that "sed '/^;/d' d*.el | wc" for 1.22 shows
shrinkage compared to that for 1.21 (take that as a hint as to the kinds
of patches likely to be accepted for 1.x). EDB 1.x wants code bummers!
a quick glance at the emacswiki does not show anything EDB related, so
if someone (who knows the wiki organization better than i do) can make
a space for EDB, we can use that for notes on 2.x design (and/or 1.x
concerns).
happy hacking,
thi
