Why?
To allow operation w/ Emacs 23.4 and (hopefully) prior versions.
I figure EDB releases are so infrequent, it is a good idea to be
more accomodating than not (up until the Great Rewrite, at which
point everything will break horribly (but predictably...)). :-D
