gnu and third world

hello,
      i am new to this mailing list.i have heard much about gnu and is using 
linux for six months.GNU always speaks about social commitment(info emacs-GNU 
manifesto)
,but what about millions of third world population with no access to 
computers(they have to think about their stomaches too).can't gnu do something 
for them?have it done something in this way.i am interested to know more   
about it.
