                              Linux in Real Time


    Certain applications in computing need the immediacy of operating in
    real time. Complex simulation, for instance. Data acquisition, and
    instant manipulation: Financial markets. Any use for which microsecond,
    guaranteed response is your overwhelming value you need low latency,
    more importantly you must have Real Time capability. A Real Time
    kernel, a Real Time Linux distribution, a Real Time suite of tools is
    what you want, need. This month Mark Slater, of Concurrent Computer
    Corporation, presents the RedHawk realtime Linux kernel and its suite
    of libraries and development tools.

    RedHawk comprises open source patches (low latency, for example); an
    'rt' library is supplied to allow user code to utilize things like the
    PCI Base Address Register utility for driver writers; mpadvise for CPU
    affinity (delegating jobs to specific CPUs, as per your choice);
    server_block server_wake for process coordination; and shmbind and
    usermap for memory and address space management.

    There are other features in the Redhawk kernel that contribute to
    realtime performance that don't require linking applications with
    RedHawk libraries: Context switching, preemption, priority inheritance,
    hyperthreading control and CPU shielding.

    Mark will demonstrate RedHawk Linux (based on Red Hat Enterprise 3.0),
    he will display CPU shielding capability, and he will discuss the
    suite's development tools.

      * How does it relate to Red Hat? (Describes the RedHawk/Red Hat
        relationship)
      * Open Source Patches (Describes those patches from the open source
        community)
      * Concurrent Performance Enhancements (Those things Concurrent did
        for performance)
      * Shielded CPUs (Discuss added capabilities and utilities for
        hyperthreading and shielding)
      * RedHawk and kernel.org (Describes how RedHawk is kept current with
        kernel.org)
      * Determinism and Interrupt Response (Show histograms of benchmarks)
      * Development Environment (Compilers, utilities, NightStar Tool set)

    Whether you have an interest in realtime, near instantaneous computing
    for applied use (Concurrent offers complete hardware-Linux offerings),
    or are interested in development work with realtime kernels, and or
    finally the topic just plain piques your curiosity this presentation is
