Ever read _Lord of the Flies_?

You have obviously not met enough "normal" children.

Children become decent not by nature, but by years of effort by
dedicated parents.

Religion is/was one of the single biggest contributors to a general base
level of decency (modulo huge warts like burning witches, stoning one's
women, starting wars). Without religion as a context in which to raise
their child, many parents seem simply to let their kids do what they
like, be as rude as they like, and smile at it all as a "wonderful form
of self-expression".

So rather that *actually* helping an old person, he should do nothing,
because otherwise some other, unspecified and hypothetical person
*might* not get paid to do the same?
