Subject: Gnubies meeting this Wednesday-Brett Wynkoop-"Your Computer at Your
Command: A Gnubies Intro to Shells and Command Prompts."

This month we are pleased to announce that Brett Wynkoop will be speaking
at our regular Gnubies meeting on Wednesday, May 12, 2004. The topic is
"Your Computer at Your Command: A Gnubies Intro to Shells and Command
Prompts." This should be a good meeting for those of you who really are
new to GNU/Linux, or, for that matter, to any other Unix-like operating
system - our preference, of course, is always Free Software. If you have
been using the Graphical User Interface and want more power or want a
better understanding of the command line and shells, this should be a good
meeting for you. And knowing our speaker there may also be some
interesting tidbits for those of you who have been around longer.

Bio:
Brett Wynkoop has been messing about with Unix and Unix like systems
since the early 1980's. He has programed and administered almost every
type of Unix system over the past 20 years. He runs a Brooklyn based
computer consulting firm that has clients in the financial, defense,
entertainment and retail industries. Mr. Wynkoop may be reached at
wynkoop-at-wynn.com.

The talk:
This talk will introduce basic concepts of interacting with a computer
at the command prompt. It will explain what a command processor, or
shell is and discuss the 2 major families of shells. Practical examples
will be given to help the new user tap the hidden power of the shell
interface.

The meeting, as usual, will be held at the IBM building in
Manhattan -- please see below for the procedures required for attending
meetings at IBM. We are grateful to IBM for continuing to provide us with
the space for our meetings.
