User Mode Linux: multiple instances/distros, simultaneously/cheaply/safely
Have you ever wanted to run Debian Linux and Slackware side by side?
Or, how about Red Hat Linux and Suse? Why not all of them at the same
time?
Traditionally this wasn't possible. You would need to boot each Linux
OS one at a time to use them. Or you would need to purchase multiple
computers to run all the different Linux distributions simultaneously.
For obvious reasons this is not affordable, practical, etc. Today that
is no longer the case, thanks to dedicated Linux kernel hackers and
the ample capabilities of the Linux kernel: It is now possible to
"virtualize" the Linux kernel with User Mode Linux.
Short version: User Mode Linux virtualizes the Linux kernel so that
you can run Debian, Slackware, Redhat, Suse, and any other distro all
at the same time on a single machine!
Long version: User Mode Linux engages in a very efficient form of
virtualization that directly modifies the Linux kernel so that the
kernel is able to be run as a normal executable. Essentially this
allows one to spawn many different User Mode Linux instances on a
single machine. Once you add some basic networking and file system
support (all provided by any basic Linux kernel), you have a full
blown virtualization environment that allows you to run as many
distributions as you want. Arguably it doesn't get cooler than this.
Real world uses for User Mode Linux. Hosting: No longer do you have to
shell out big money to run your own (physical) server. Instead find an
enlightened User Mode Linux provider and enjoy the savings of running
virtual Linux servers a la UML way. Kernel testing: No longer do you
have to have to actually boot into a kernel to test a patch, rather
test it with the ease of User Mode Linux, with minimal risks to your
real workstation/server.
BONUS! During the meeting, all attendees will receive a CDROM
containing all the User Mode Linux software, documentation, and custom
made Linux distribution images they need to get started in the comfort
of their own homes! Come and enjoy this presentation.
