But to use part or all of what's in those copies,
you need to make further copies, which you cannot
do. It's like buying a copy of a book - you're free
to rip out pages to your heart's content, but you
cannot photostat these pages. 

For first sale to apply, you need operate on the
physical copy you own. Once you transfer the 
IP to another medium, you're infringing. Thus, 
for every copy you want to distribute, you will
need to download a copy to a removable medium,
combine it _on that medium_ with other works,
whereupon you distribute that medium. Put it
on a public server for electronic distribution, 
and you've made the equivalent of a photocopy.
