Misuse of copyright aside for a moment (the penalty for
copyright misuse -- unenforceability of the copyright in
court until the misuse has been purged and its effects
no longer exist -- is tantamount to losing the copyright),
nobody's saying the GPL'd works are in the public domain.
For example, derivative works of the GPL'ed original works
remain under the GPL and only the GPL if one chooses to
license them to third parties.
