 Compatriots,
A couple of quick things as we get ready for our second DRM
demonstration on Wednesday at 7pm (check
 http://www.freeculturenyu.org/2005/11/22/our-next-drm-demonstration/
for the flyer and a lively discussion in the comments).

But first things first. Richard M Stallman will be giving a talk tomorrow
at Cooper Union. People consider RMS the "philosopher" of the free software
movement -- he invented the GNU license which has had a huge influence on
the development of Linux and free software. Check out Wikipedia's entry on
 him here :

 http://www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Stallman

Here's the info on his lecture:

 Copyright vs Community

Copyright developed in the age of the printing press, and was designed to
fit with the system of centralized copying imposed by the printing press.
But the copyright system does not fit well with computer networks, and only
draconian punishments can enforce it. The global corporations that profit
from copyright are lobbying for draconian punishments, and to increase
their copyright powers, while suppressing public access to technology. But
if we seriously hope to serve the only legitimate purpose of copyright--to
promote progress, for the benefit of the public--then we must make changes
 in the other direction.

 a lecture by Richard Stallman

 from 12 -2 on Tuesday November 29 2005,
 at the Great Hall
7th Street at 3rd Avenue, New York City

This Talk is Open to the Public and Admission is Free

Interesting stuff, no? I highly recommend everyone on this list attends --
Richard has promised me he'll promote our DRM demonstration at the talk,
and showing up will be a great way to show our appreciation. Inga and I
will be there a bit early to hand out flyers and meet new people, so feel
 free to come then.

We had originally planned an informal meeting tonight at 8, but due to a
couple unforeseen scheduling conflicts, we've decided to move it to 2:15
tomorrow, after RMS's talk. We will be going over to Kimmel to work on
another sandwich board (because our last one was so successful) and do some
last minute organizing for our protest. Please join us -- there will be
 scented watercolor markers. Enough said.

And of course, you cannot miss our second demonstration at Wednesday at 7pm
at Tower Records on 4th Street and Broadway. This time we'll hopefully have
some pretty serious press attending (I can't name specifics yet, but after
an article in USAToday about our last protest, we got some good attention).
So please come and dress very warmly (it might rain in the morning, but
Wednesday night looks totally clear). Again, check out the blog
 (http://www.freeculturenyu.org)
for more info and a copy of the flyer.

 'Till Then,
